Designed with both owner/operators and rental markets in mind, the Nauticam system is very easy to build. Assembled with just a coin and a No. 3 Allen wrench, the entire lens and bracket control system is built into the base plate. No. 3 Allen wrench, the entire lens and bracket control system is built into the camera base plate outside the housing. This means that the equipment can be built on a tabletop, in good light and with plenty of working space. Once the camera is mounted on its tray, the entire system slides into the housing and locks securely in place.
Lens exchanges are easily made with the camera out of the housing or from the port opening when the camera is installed.
The lens gear system is universal, slides forward or backward to match the location of the lens control ring and pivots down to positively engage. No tools are required, with thumbscrews firmly locking all adjustments in place.
A "C" shaped support ring is used with very long zoom lenses, providing structural support that allows precise control.
A wide variety of lenses are supported, from very small Zeiss standard speeds to very large cinema-style zooms. Our port system has been tested with Arri UWZ 9.5-18, the most sophisticated wide-angle lens ever produced, with excellent results.
Especially with the rental market in mind, the system comes out of a travel case and is ready to shoot in a matter of minutes. The three housing handles slide into dovetail slots and lock securely in place with cam levers. These handles can be adjusted on the water to fine-tune ergonomics and control access.
Cinema Focus, Iris and Zoom knobs
Large diameter rubber lens control knobs with marking discs give the operator precise control over the lens and are positioned on the handles for ergonomic operation.
Glass dome port with 250mm optical coating is supplied with each system, and we believe it is the best optic available for cine lenses.
The dome port diameter of 250mm (10 inches) is key to good wide-angle imaging performance with many underwater cine lenses. Smaller domes can work well with close-focus SLR lenses, but many cine lenses have a longer minimum focus distance in the .35-.40m (14-16") range. Using Arri Master Prime T1.4 / 14mm, with its .4m MFD as an example, the 250mm dome provides clearly superior results, with much less corner softness than the smaller domes. This is the same dome used in the optical system designed in conjunction with HydroFlex for Alexa65, and used in film productions.
The glass dome is robust and extremely scratch resistant. Broadband anti-reflective coatings eliminate glare, reflections and ghosting from the port optics. A rugged machined aluminum shield protects the dome and provides additional glare resistance.
One of Nauticam's most iconic features is the red port locking lever. This system uses an internal bayonet, allowing the ports to be mounted directly to the housing and then securely locked in place. There is no need to turn it, just press and lock. This simplifies lens changes and actually reduces the chance of an extruded O-ring causing a leak.
Numerous 1/4-20, 3/4-16 and 10mm threaded accessory mounting locations are provided. These accessory positions allow monitors, lights, tripod/arm plates and other accessories to be conveniently placed on the housing.
The housing is shipped with an Anton Bauer "Gold Mount" battery plate and a LEMO connector for the Alexa Mini camera. Ample space is available for a variety of battery pack sizes to be used in the housing, providing long run times. Surface-supplemented power is also an option for all-day tethered shooting.
A sliding weight bracket allows the front-rear edge to be dynamically adjusted in the water, providing a natural up or down port position as needed. The bracket accepts readily available dive weights, which are easily obtained on site.
Additional counterweights can be attached to the casing skids, or to trim weight mounting locations strategically placed inside the casing, to mark neutral buoyancy and left-to-right balance.
Nauticam offers several camera monitoring solutions. Options include the smartphone-sized SmallHD 502, widely used TVLogic VFM-058 and 7" Atomos Shogun.
Shown here is TVLogic VFM-058, in Nauticam NA-058 housing. The 5.5" 1920 x 1080 display with professional monitoring tools to assess exposure of focus ads is an excellent choice for Alexa Mini systems.
Unobstructed surface control is a key need of many top underwater professionals, and those needs have been integrated in as many ways as possible throughout the design process.
The basic "diver-controlled" system fully meets the needs of a single operator, but our production set-oriented line of accessories makes the Nauticam housing as comfortable on a feature film set as it is on an Indo-Pacific coral reef.
The housing contains enough internal space to internally mount Arri's "cforce mini" motors. These motors drive the lens controls of the housing, not the lens itself, meaning that any lens supported in the housing can be configured for Focus, Iris and Zoom surface control. Alexa Mini features an integrated motor controller, allowing the system to be configured without any motor controller box.
These motors are mounted on specially designed brackets that attach to the camera tray and do not need to be removed when changing lenses or removing the camera from the housing.
The housing also ships with two 3/4" Hydroflex bulkheads that allow the power, remote control and remote umbilical monitor from other Hydroflex rental systems to be used on the Alexa Mini.
The advanced vacuum verification and leak detection system allows the system's watertight integrity to be tested prior to immersion in water, and an advanced vacuum monitoring system with built-in temperature compensation provides constant feedback to the operator on the safety of the system.
A "dual activation" vacuum valve allows vacuum testing with a commonly available BCD inflation hose or a hand pump for situations where compressed air is not available.
